SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society) SANDS is a registered charity that works to support anyone affected by pregnancy loss or the death of a baby. Sands was founded by bereaved parents in 1978 who found that there was no access to support following the deaths of their babies. Since then Sands has grown, but parents who have experienced baby loss are still at the heart of everything we do. They also carry out
vital work to improve maternity safety through targeted research,
campaigning for change, working with government and reducing inequalities
in healthcare to save babies' lives. Babies are dying every
day. Currently in the UK, 13 families a day suffer the heartbreak of
losing their baby before, during or shortly after birth. This must change. SANDS’ vision is for a world where fewer babies die and when a baby does die anyone affected receives the best possible care and support for as long as they need. son, Thomas, in 2007 I felt very alone and unsupported. SANDS gave me that
support and a safe place to talk, moan, cry etc. without judgment. I soon discovered I was
not alone in my journey of grief. I did not know the other people who
shared their experiences but felt connected through their empathy. Thomas would have been
18 in April (2025) and that seems an ideal milestone to do something
special. I will be raising money for what I feel is a worthwhile cause and
to give something back, to try to help those just starting out on this
journey of loss. This fundraising event,
apart from raising money for SANDS, hopes to re-establish the Surrey
branch of SANDS. From posts I have read on social media, it is still very
much needed in this area." Tess
